Abbas Ali Khan’s tribute to Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh at Kuch Khaas this weekend

Monday, November 14th, 2011 6:52:38 by

Demise of ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh last month not only shook India but left everyone in subcontitnent mourning. Like Michael Jackson and Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, he too left an empty space that probably will never be filled and I feel for our next
generations who will grow up in the era that will be lacking the soul touching music of these legends.

Known as “The Ghazal King”, Jagjit along with his wife Chitra Singh, another gilt-edged ghazal singer from India rose to stardom after giving mega hit songs for the movies “Arth” and “Saath saath” in 1982.

The duo is considered to be the pioneers of contemporary ghazals and categorized as the most successful recording artists outside Bollywood’s film music.

Chitra disappeared from the scene later however Jagjit kept on coming with heart thumping ghazals for almost two decades for which he was also awarded the third most prestigious accolade in India “Padma Bhushan” for his outstanding achievements in music.

When he was alive, his deep lyrics and magical vocals made millions cry throughout the globe and when he passed away, his loss caused teary eyes which shows what a gem he was.

Since his death, series of tributes by other prominent Indian singers has started and this wave recently inspired Pakistani classical-oriented singer Abbas Ali Khan who was a hardcore fan of Jagjit and payed a homage by singing his ghazals at Islamabad Club
on 4th November.

It was named as “Mera Geet Amar Kar Do”, a line from Jagjit’s famous ghazal “Honton Se Chu Lo Tum” and was organized by a local company “Lush”. It was the brainchild of Abbas and when asked about the particulars, he replied

“I’ll only be singing ghazals by Singh, and 10 other musicians will accompany me. I’m very excited about this concert,”

It was a huge success and received outstandingly well by the capacity crowd and that is what motivated Abbas to come up with yet another tribute.

With the same lineup of ten musicians, Abbas will be paying a tribute to the legend yet again at “Kuch Khaas” coming Friday. Ticket is set at modest 700 Rs to ensure every fan shows up on the night. If last event was big, this is going to be huge and I am
sure no one would want to miss it so make sure you get the tickets on time.
