One of the most experienced and respected football players in the capital, Islamabad Academy skipper Baqar Hassan has often been labeled as one of the best young defenders in the country.
Starting his footballing journey with the City School team, the centre-back has emerged as top class defender, whose lack of a physical presence has been more than covered up with his reading of the game.
Possessing an inert desire for the sport, the 19-year-old has developed his defending abilities to such an extent that he is able to meet the challenge of even the sternest forwards.
An avid supporter of Manchester United, Baqar idolizes the defensive duo of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, but it is the England International’s style of play which really sums up the former Headstart team vice-captain.
Leading the Islamabad-based side to glory in the IFA School Championship, the NUST star rightfully garnered raving reviews for his performances and also earned the best defender award in the process. However that has not even cast a light on what the youngster
has accomplished over the years.
Baqar is the current captain of his club, which plays in the Islamabad A-League but has also plyed his trade in the money-making Geo Super League as well representing his home town at U14, U17 and U19 levels.
In addition to that, the stalwart has also made it into the National team set-up but was unable to take part due to some personal issues.
While his achievements have been remarkable for someone at his age, things for Baqar have never always been an easy ride.
“There are a lot of politics involved in Pakistani Football and the officials are also quite corrupt, so without contacts it is near impossible to reach the highest level,” he recalls.
“But I am glad that I have made it this far.”
Commenting on what the future holds for him, Baqar said that he aiming sky high and he hoped that his name would one day feature on the Pakistan jersey.
However his ambitions do not end there and the so called best defender of Islamabad reiterated that making it to a professional club abroad was also a part of his grandiose plans.

Baqar should keep up the good work. Although I wish he had given a shot abroad for soccer scholarship programs in USA or Ireland etc where he would have gotten into a higher quality and competitive environment not only for education but also to mature with good coaching and good football
Baqar has his own Facebook Page. Show your support to one of Islamabad’s best defenders.
