Oprah Winfrey received an Oscar for her humanitarian work in a glittering black-tie event of the Academy Motion Picture Arts and Science 2011 Governors Awards in California on Saturday.
The 57-year-old idol described the accolade as unimaginable, when she looked back at her upbringing while growing up in Mississippi.
"All of us can make a difference through the life we lead," Winfrey said. "We’re all here to help each other.
“I never imagined myself receiving an Oscar, especially for what I’m considering my calling,” Winfrey said.
“Nobody could ever imagine that it would be possible that you could be anything other than a maid, who had some good white folks who would give her clothes and let her take food home for the holiday,” she said. “It’s unimaginable that I would be standing
before you tonight.”
The event was attended by many household names of Hollywood, which included stars such as John Travolta, Alec Baldwin and Glenn Close. The occasion is an annual gathering where celebrities are awarded with respect to the impact they have on the industry.
The other honorary Oscar went to actor, James Earls Jones, who was awarded for a body of acting work in movies such as the “The Great White Hopes”( for his performance as a boxer) and “Star Wars”( Darth Vader). The actor could not attend the star-studded
night but said that he was “deeply honored, mighty graceful and just plain gobsmacked” in a speech tapped earlier.
The king of makeup, Dock Smith was also awarded for his work behind the scenes, which has seen him make actors old, young, sick, dying through the course of some ever green movies such as The Godfather, Taxi and The Exorcist.
"This kind of puts the crowning cap on all that," Simon said after receiving the award.
