Road Crash leads to at least twenty-three losing their lives

At least twenty-three people were killed and more than 20 sustained injuries as a result of collision between a passenger van and bus on National Highway near Thatta, on Sunday.

The speeding passenger van, which was travelling towards Karachi from Badin, collided with a bus heading for Shah Aqiq from Karachi. The dreadful accident left the van in deformed pieces scattered everywhere around the site of the mishap. At the place of accident
local people, police and emergency services got engaged in rescue and relief activities. Their work was hampered owing to the fall of darkness after dusk.

Some dead bodies and injured were stuck in the twisted pieces of van and the rescue teams had to cut the seats to retrieve them. According to police sources, 20 passengers were inside the van while the bus carried 70 passengers. Bodies and injured were rushed
to Makli Civil Hospital where emergency has been declared. Rangers were also called in to hospital as a security measure. Eight of the most seriously wounded had to be shifted to Karachi Civil Hospital whose condition is said to be critical. DPO Thatta Muhammad
Ali Wassan feared that all the passengers of the van seemed to have perished in the accident. The accident had caused a severe traffic jam on the busy National Highway, sources added.

Deceased Abdul Ghaffar is said to be a personnel of law-enforcement agency coming from Matli.The identity of other deceased could not be ascertained till filing of this report.

Wajahat Ali, resident of Chuhar Jamali who was travelling in the bus was injured said that the gory accident took place as speedy van tried to overtake another bus.

 

Villagers of nearby areas reached the spot and started rescue work. The ill-fated passenger van was completely destroyed and mutilated bodies were scattered on the spot and some of them were caught in the mangled remains of the vehicles. Bodied of 10 persons
were so mutilated that they could not be identified. A nearby police post when approached by the locals refused to come to rescue saying that the spot of the accident was not in their jurisdiction

The dead and injured were shifted to Makli Civil Hospital and Gharo hospitals. Rescue work by the villagers on self-help basis was hampered due to darkness. District administration declared emergency in the hospitals. Traffic on the National Highway was
blocked due to the accident.
