Vigorous quit of Shah Mehmood Qureshi

The resignation of former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the National Assembly (NA) was not entirely an unanticipated move.

Some critics claimed that Qureshi, who changed his political affiliations numerous times in the past, was an annoyed and discontented man. He parted ways with his party leadership, remarkably over the Raymond Davis issue.

Somehow, the better choice for the leaders and parties is that to go their own ways instead of depending on unwilling members. The Qurehi’s case, in a particular, the party he had criticized quite frankly on numerous occasions, even acting to freeze bills
seconded by it.

Nevertheless the exit of a man who was once in the race for the post of a prime minister brings down damage on the party.

It seems that the timing of Mehmood Qureshi’s resignation was planned, as it came out amidst growing demand of political change well before the next general election that is scheduled in early 2013.

Shah Mehmood has not declared thus far of what guiding principle he aims to take as far as his political future is concerned. However, it seems that he will join hands with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

It is the same party that leaders from other groups are also looking to go for it, as its star climbs higher and higher in a sky where it had once been practically unseen.

Surely, the PTI looks to be on the track for those who can win elections, and Shah Mehmood Qureshi definitely ranks high among these contestants. The Pakistan Peoples Party is required also to mull over its own place.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan, and other senior party members including Qamar Zaman Kaira, Latif Khosa and Pervez Ashraf have lashed out ruthlessly against Qureshi. What they say may not be entirely incorrect.

Nevertheless it is also accurate that the former foreign minister’s powerfully worded attack on his former party and President Asif Ali Zardari will leave at the rear wounds that will damage, particularly in the present situation where the PPP is already
under pressure against corruption charges and bad governance.

Qureshi has played on these, and without any doubt will carry on to do so in the future, as the political drama continues to rock around in hasty spheres.
