A meeting between Pakistani Prime Minister, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, and high-officials is scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 17, 2011. It is expected that during the congregation the prime minister will approve the
Third Generation (3G) telecommunications policy and will order the IT ministry to take appropriate steps for the implementation of this technology in the country.
The current Pakistani regime is resolute in upgrading the technology and move from current 2G to 3G telecom technology. This is being done to upgrade the country’s status in the IT sector.
If the policy gets approval, the ministry would instruct Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to search for interested parties who would invest in the industry and bring 3G technology into the country.
“Deliberations have been held at the President’s House in meetings chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari,” an official said.
The official further said that the federal cabinet’s sub-committee, which is headed by Finance Minister Hafeez Shaikh, has forwarded these recommendations to the prime minister and asked him to introduce 3G technology in Pakistan.
The rest of committee comprises of Dr. Asim Hussain, Petroleum Minister, Water and Power Minister Naveed Qamar and Ghaus Bux Mehar, Privatisation Minister.
The official quoted the committee and said, “3G would have an effective economic impact as foreign investors would be interested in investing their money in development of IT. Pakistan has huge opportunity in IT for foreign investors.”
The committee said further, “3G would provide employment opportunities for the youth qualified in the field of IT. The committee said that this move will help speed up e-governance projects which will strengthen government networking.”
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has done its home work on the subject matter and will summon interested parties through formal procedures in near future.
The advent of 3G in Pakistan will not affect the telecom system badly, as number of personals using smart phones is very scarce. However, those who have been using such phones will prefer applications such as Skype, as a medium
for communication because they’ll be cost effective. This will shrink the revenues for mobile companies to some extent.
Telecom companies in Pakistan foreseeing this threat have already made budgets for investing in 3G technology claimed a source.
