Martin Scorsese’s ‘Hugo’ is an upcoming 3D adventure film based on Brian Selznick’s novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Directed by Martin Scorsese and written by John Lugan, Hugo is
set to hit the theatres on November 23rd, 2011.
The 127 minutes flick is a co-production of Graham King’s GK Films and Johnny Depp’s Infinitum Nihil. The film stars Asa Butterfield, Chlow Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen,
Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer and Jude Law. This is Scorsese first 3D film and is set in 1930s.
The story centres on Hugo Cabret, a 12-year-old boy who has ended up as an orphan, living in the walls of a train station in Paris. He finds a mystery involving his father, a broken
robot and himself and after encountering with an eccentric girl and a cold reserved man who runs the toy shop, Hugo sets on a fascinating and a magical journey which could jeopardise his secrets.
THQ and Paramount Digital Entertainment made a game based on the flick. It will be released on the Nintendo Ds and Nintendo 3DS with Jude Law reprising his role as Hugo’s father while
Joshua Seth will replace Butterfield to star as the character of Hugo.
Shortly after the book was released in 2007, GK films acquired the screen rights. It was filmed at London’s Shepperton Studios as well as on locations in London, Paris and the Nene Valley
Railway near Peterborough.
The 170 million budgeted Hugo received good reviews after it was screened at the New York Film Festival as a work-in-progress with colour correction, sound mixing, 3D and visual effects
not fully complete.
Jordan Raup from The Film Stage declared, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo enthralling dose of film history from cinema’s greatest admirer.”
Cine Blend stated, “Scorsese’s Hugo, even unfinished, may be the best live-action 3D film ever.”
Matt Patches of Hollywood.com was one of the few who saw the incomplete screening of the movie in the festival. He said, “…will end up being (for me) one of the best mainstream films
of the year.”
Patches praised Butterfield, “the most magical part of the movie is the lead performer: Butterfield. So often it’s difficult to find a child actor who isn’t painfully aware he’s in
a movie. A kid who can just act like a kid.”
Hugo is a magical movie and a mysterious new adventure, making it a must watch for everyone.
