Stretching does not help muscle soreness
Researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia have concluded that stretching in the days following exercise does not produce significant reductions in muscle soreness.
The conclusions of the study will be published in next month’s issue of The British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers looked at 12 different studies made on the topic in the last 25 years and reviewed their findings to arrive at their conclusions.
However, they have stated that it does not meant they should not stretch. The authors stated that while stretching may not provide the benefits many of us expect, the actions have other advantages.
The findings may put an end to the everlasting debate about the advantages of stretching. Those who exercise can be divided into two groups. There are groups that tend to think of the activity helping in preventing muscle soreness after injury. while there
are others who believe it is a wasteful activity.
Scientists however believe that both groups have plenty of evidence to prove as support but due to technical difficulties in studying the phenomena, conclusive research is difficult to conduct.
Robert D. Herbert, a professor at the George Institute for Global Health at the University of Sydney has given the best possible explanation for the findings. “Our interpretation of the data is that, on average, stretching really does reduce soreness, but
the reduction is tiny.”
“There is little evidence that stretching does anything important,” he says, “but there is also little to be lost from doing it. If you like stretching, then do it. On the other hand, if you don’t like stretching, or are always in a rush to exercise, you
won’t be missing out on much if you don’t stretch.”
