GEO television found wanting as PTV and ZEE TV close in on a big deal
Friday, November 18th, 2011 1:50:56 by Taha HabibPakistan television have admirably been trying to sign a contract with India’s Zee television for the live telecast of different cricket matches. This move of the Pakistan’s pioneer television channel has received lot of criticism off late
by satellite channels like Geo, ARY and Express.
So far, Geo Super is the only sports channel operating in the country and therefore holds monopoly. It offers a wide range of live sports from cricket to hockey, badminton, kabaddi, soccer, swimming etc. Apart from this, it also covers the events like Olympics
and the World Cups.
This stand of PTV has largely been criticised by GEO TV, as they believe it could offer them fierce competition and will eventually lessen its value.
Geo TV officials must recognise the fact that PTV only wants to fulfil the demand of cricket lovers in the country by telecasting matches from across the globe. If our national television channel is spending huge amount of money just to quench the thirst
of its cricket lovers than I guess that no one should have any problems with this.
PTV recently televised a few cricket matches, courtesy, ZEE television through one of its channels, ‘PTV National’ in order to see public’s response. A survey suggested that Pakistan Television should continue with their efforts irrespective of what other
channels have to say.
It can be easily apprehended by any one that Geo TV just wants to deprive PTV and its viewers of their right to watch their favourite teams in action.
Geo TV even had an issue with PTV during the 2011 Cricket World Cup, when it accused the local channel of breaking PEMRA rules.
The matter was later resolved in favour of the Pakistan Television and GEO were themselves found guilty of breaking rules. As a result, the subsidiary channel of Geo television, ‘AAG’ was blocked for showing world cup games without any proper authorisation.
Geo Super also received the blocking orders for breaching rules and therefore, people switched to PTV.
Now, Geo television is once again trying to create barriers for PTV by criticising their efforts of tying knots with an Indian television. As far as PTV is concerned, their only motive is to provide the nation with as many live games as possible.
As long as PTV stays by their motive, I don’t think there is any harm in fixing terms with a foreign channel. After all, Geo Super had a contract with Star Cricket during the England-India series and we all know very well, to which country does Star Cricket
belongs!
So, we should all stand in support of MD PTV, Mr. Yousuf Mirza, and remind Geo television of their own words;
GEO AUR JEENE DO!!
