By keeping in view the gas crisis in Pakistan, the government is planning to put a ban on the consumption of CNG in private cars and to encourage its use in the local transport.
Government is planning to move a summary to the cabinet for the restriction of CNG in private cars. The reason behind this idea is that the government official thinks private car owners can afford Diesel and Petrol.
Petroleum and Natural Resource Minister, Dr Asim Hussain said, "“The government is considering restricting consumption of CNG by private cars simply because car owners can afford petrol and diesel."
He further said that the fares of public transports are increasing day by day. By doing so, the CNG consumption will be promoted in public transport to offer cheap fare to the public. In this way, the use of public transport will
also be appreciated.
Hussain also shared that along with the idea to ban CNG in the private cars, the ministry is thinking to ask the cabinet to restrict gas fitting companies from fitting CNG kits in private cars.
In support of Hussain, Petroleum Secretary, Ejaz Chaudhry, said that we are also thinking to put a ban on all types of vehicles as they can afford other fuels though they are a bit expensive.
He further added, "Right now, we are in initial stages because we have to first take important stakeholders into confidence including the Ministry of Industries.”
Further discussing the issue, he said, "At the same time, I want to assure people that the government is not against the CNG sector, but people also need to realise that the country faces gas shortage and they have to be economical.
CNG is a very important sector and we do not want to discourage it."
CNG has share 0f 8% consumption in total gas consumption. But the growth in CNG consumers has increased remarkably in last few years and can create problems because of severe gas shortage.
