Participants of a seminar agreed to take concrete steps to enhance people-to-people contact and trade relations among SAARC member countries to make the region prosperous and hub of the economic activities.
In a seminar organized by the South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA), speakers urged to reduce those differences that have reduced the interaction of member countries.
In his welcoming remarks Imtiaz Aalam Secretary SAFMA said that member countries should solve their issues through peaceful dialogues.
He said that Pakistan, India and Afghanistan should work together for the stability of the region. He said that member countries should ensure exchange of journalists and also free flow of information among the member countries. He further stated that people-to-people
contact should be enhanced as it is vital to bridge the gap between member countries.
Indian Deputy High Commissioner said that social prosperity can be gained through cultural ties and regional cooperation. The bilateral and regional cooperation are necessary for the development of the region, he commented.
He said that Addu conference is a beacon for all the members’ countries especially Pakistan and India and they should follow it. He said that member countries should increased their interaction in media, films and other social levels as it is a vital platform
for mutual gains.
He maintained that the member countries should focus on exchange of delegations at academic levels. He informed that India is providing scholarships to foreign students to enhance ties.
Mehfooz Ur Rehman, Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh, said SAARC objectives are defined in its charter and during Addu conference these objectives are reiterated.
He said that member countries needs connectivity and collective understanding to promote good relations and should work for it. He said that all the member countries should promote different resources like roads, railway tracks, tourism and other sectors
to increase the contacts at grass root level.
We all should share our responsibilities for regional growth as “United We Stand”, he added.
Rahim Ullah, Secretary of Afghan Embassy strongly criticized the role of neighboring countries in Afghanistan. In the presence of big powers in the region US is controlling the internal matters of Afghanistan which should be matter of concern for neighboring
countries.
He said that SAFMA should work for positive role in Afghanistan and Afghanistan would welcome the cooperation of SAARC countries. He said that terrorists are disturbing the peace and development in Pakistan and Afghanistan and these two countries should
take concrete steps for to curb terrorism.
He said that member countries should work for economic prosperity of the region and economic prosperity would eliminate the poverty and other basic issues of SAARC countries.
Nusrat Javed, a well known journalist, said that bureaucracies of both, India and Pakistan, were responsible to tense the environment. He said that these people have made the visa process so complicated, adding the miseries to the visitors of duo sides.
