Sindh Information Minister, Sharjeel Memon resigned from his post at the provincial cabinet after an extensive meeting with the President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday.
Just a day before, the correspondents of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) raised their voices against Memon’s tour to London. Memon went to London with the former home minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza, who also resigned from his post last month.
Despite of the fact that Memon calls his act of resigning a willingly act but the sources of Sindh Government consider it as a result of close meeting of MQM with the President Zardari.
MQM’s recent meeting with the President was held after Zulfiqar Mirza went to London to assist Scotland Yard Officials in the murder case of Dr Imran Farooq.
While giving his resignation, the former Information Minister said, “My ministry belongs to the party.”
“I have voluntarily offered to resign and forwarded my resignation to President Zardari because I believe that I should no more hold the office if I have been a source of embarrassment to the party. Ministries have never been a charm for a true political
worker,” Memon added.
When asked whether he was forced to resign from his position, Memon denied and said that no one has compelled him to do so.
Nevertheless, he stated that he has been asked to meet the President in upcoming days, where he is required to explain the gravity of the situation.
However, a vital PPP leader claimed that Memon’s resignation was a part of MQM’s demand, as they head towards building a close relationship with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
“A message has been conveyed well to every member of the cabinet and parliament from the party. If someone deviates from the policy of reconciliation or becomes a source of tension between the two parties, he may face the same fate,” Memon said.
