Over thousand national and international Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) are functioning in the federal capital and remote areas of the country without having any monitoring system while authorities paid no heed to devise any mechanism to monitor their
activities.
A large number of national and international aid agencies landed in the country during the 2005 earthquake and recent catastrophic floods but majority of them did not left the ground after that.
These organisations are working on different development projects in the country but authorities have not developed any system to monitor their activities, funding and expenditures.
These NGOs collect billions of rupees annually in the name of infrastructure development in the calamity hit areas of the country but situation has not improved yet.
On one hand NGOs are spending billions of rupees for the country’s development but on the other hand numbers of people living below the poverty line are increasing day-by-day.
It has been observed that certain international aid agencies are portraying that they are working in the tribal areas but their officials have not paid any visit to these areas. These organizations have hired the services of local NGOs and use them for different
purposes.
In spite of spending the expenditures for the betterment of hapless people, they give handsome amounts to their employees in terms of salaries, luxuries and their advertisement campaigns. Only a small portion of the funding is being spent in the development
work.
Ahmed, a government employee, expressing his concerns said that strength of these local and international NGOs was rapidly increasing but problems of the masses have not started decreasing thus far.
He also alleged that these organizations are collecting funds on the pretence of development and elimination of different problems but spent these amounts for their hidden agendas.
He demanded of the government to form a mechanism to monitor the activities of these NGOs as well as their funding system.
In this regard, when contacted, Sajid Baloch, Director Industries, Production and Non Profit Organizations, informed that they did not have sufficient staff, and therefore monitoring system has been suspended.
He maintained that an Assistant Director is responsible to check the activities of the NGOs. They have requested the Chief Commissioner to provide the required staff and following that the monitoring will be started.
The government should form a mechanism to monitor the activities of these organisations that will not only the hapless people but also figure out the notorious elements.
