The devastating floods in 2010 damaged Kahrif crops on 4403.5 hectares area, Pakistan National Assembly was told during its last session.
According to a survey conducted by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), a total of 2.364 million hectares of Kharif crops were sown during 2010 before the devastating flooding all across the country damaged 4403.5 hectares of it.
The damaged crop included 0.598 million hectares of cotton, 0.876 million hectares of paddy, 0.195 million hectares of sugarcane and 0.695 million hectares of various other crops.
According to the provincial dissection Sindh suffered the maximum loss as the floods damaged total of 2112.61 hectares area here. The total cultivated area damaged in Punjab is 1748.48 hectares, 282.07 hectares area of crops in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 260.34
hectares in Balochistan.
The government of Pakistan had ordered the National Disaster Management Authority to provide free seeds and urea fertilisers to the affected growers. NDMA told the National Assembly that it has so far distributed 48,570 tons of wheat seed and 29,535.45 tons
of urea fertiliser among the farmers of flood-hit districts of Sindh.
In Punjab, NDMA has distributed 10,54,563 bags of wheat seed of 50 kg and 10,68,807 bags of urea fertiliser free of cost in the flood-stricken districts of Bhakkar, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Layyah, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur and Muzaffargarh.
In Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtumkhwa government has distributed monetary package among the affected growers. In KPK the flood victims of 12 severely affected districts were provided with input cost for wheat crop i.e. seed and fertiliser Rs 2400 per acre.
The monetary assistance was provided to 102586 people of KPK covering an area of 200000 acres under wheat crop.
In Balochistan, against federal government grant of Rs 638.40 million for agriculture, free seeds of wheat, sunflower, sorghum, paddy seed, alfalfa and cotton have been distributed among the farmers of 15 flood affected districts of the province.
Besides providing free of cost Urea fertilizers and seeds, the government of Pakistan has written off the loans of the farmers in the flood affected districts.
