United Nation’s relief agency, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that a majority of the five million flood affectees of Pakistan could remain without help.
OCHA revealed on Tuesday that only 35 per cent of its targeted 357 million US dollar aid has been met by the donors so far and many of the people affected by flash floods this year are still awaiting assistance from the aid agencies.
OCHA and various other relief agencies had launched a rapid response plan on 18 September but the agencies have received only $80 million of the requested $357 million so far.
OCHA, in its latest report, has warned that if the international donor agencies did not respond immediately to the calls for additional support, the country will continue to face food and shelter shortages. Access to clean drinking water and sanitation conditions
still remain critical, putting thousands at risk.
OCHA’s Stacey Winston is in Pakistan these days met Aditya Mehta and explained about how the funding gap will affect the Agency’s work in the country. He warned that most relief stocks are likely to run out and an immediate funding is the need of hour.
Pakistan has been severely devastated by floods for the second consecutive year. Although rains have stopped in the flood-hit areas, flood waters remain in parts of the country. According to the figures claimed by Pakistani Government, the devastating floods
have left 466 people dead, 756 injured and more than five million people in the southern Pakistan in need of food, shelter materials, safe drinking water, sanitation services, and other essential support.
According to the OCHA, around 50 per cent of those in need have been provided with food while 700,000 have received essential medical services. An estimated 375,000 people (76 per cent) have emergency shelter and 870,000 of the affected population (35 per
cent) received clean water.
