Be the change
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 4:14:18 by Sharjeel AhmadThe Subcontinent’s renowned political leader, Mahatma Gandhi, used to advise his followers “Be the change that you want in the world”. What a perfect and practical saying. There is no change outside, it just takes place inside provided we are willing for
it. Day in day out, we talk about transition, change and revolution; and we blame people, system and traditions for being hurdles in the way of change; but we never bother what we are contributing in this regard.
This has become a social norm, especially in the Pakistani society, to lampoon the system for every mishap. In drawing room, dining table and tea house debates, you see people discussing the faults and flaws of the system and expecting overnight change.
Who makes the system? Are not we? Who forms the society? Are not we? The answers of these questions is YES. If so, why to blame system only? Every individual is a crucial part of the system, and he/she contributes to its collapse or rise. But none of us
is ready to own this responsibility. Believe me, no change can ever come in this way.
In order to get rid of exploitation, oppression, crimes, corruption and other such type of shitty things, every one of us needs to change. Every one of us needs to be pioneer. Every one of us needs to be fair with himself first. “Charity begins at home”—-a
well-said proverb. Every single needs to initiate the process of change from his/her own character.
One may contradict my notion by terming it to be utopia. But believe me, it is more than a reality. Unless you are not changed, no change is possible outside whether you wait, pray and wish for it till the doomsday.
Now the question is how can an individual change him/herself. The formula is very simple. Just sit down with tranquility for some moments and do nothing expect observing yourself. Observe what you are, why you are and where you are. Evaluate yourself. Be
accountable to the court of your conscientious. Sort out your plus and minus points. Make a list. Pick up the pen and erase all minus ones. The change is ready to sprout.
If every individual does so, an unbelievable change can occur within a few days. Then we can have comfortable and happy lives which we are starving for at the moment. “Let us lit a candle instead of cursing the darkness”.
