Qureshi set to meet Nawaz Sharif today
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 1:31:07 by Sajjad HussainIslamabad, Nov 22:The former Pakistan People’s Party member from Multan and the former Foreign Minister of the current government, Shah Mehmood Qureshi is set to meet the Pakistan Muslim League-N’s president Nawaz Sharif today. While speculations
swirl as to which party will Qureshi finally join, the choice being Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaf and PML-N, today’s meeting will decide that as it holds huge weight.
There are already reports that the PML-N has a lot to offer for the Qureshi, including seat adjustments in his stronghold – Multan. Shah Mehmood Qureshi, known for his bitter rivalry with the serving Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani, wants to break the
dominance Gillani holds in the region, which has a total of 5 National Assembly seats.
But the much-trumpeted forward-bloc that Shah Mehmood Qureshi leads, whose strength and members are not exactly known apart from a couple of supposedly strong members of Punjab assembly has yet to make any move that can upset the balance.
If Shah Mehmood Qureshi and PML-N decide to join hands, this will put the ruling PPP in an awkward situation. Given the fact that PPP has a strong influence in south Punjab, specially the region where Qureshi belongs to (which includes part of upper Sindh
as well), the PPP has to move quickly to avoid its menacing fallout for its vote bank.
There were news reports that suggested that Tuesday’s meeting agenda, more or less, will focus on the ouster of Gillani from next assembly when elections are held. A source, according to a press report, said: “Qureshi’s main agenda with regards to seat adjustment,
particularly in Multan, is Gilani’s removal from the country’s next parliament.”
Previously, there were reports – which were given credence by the observers, that Shah Mehmood Qureshi will join PTI. Nonetheless, for the political survival, Qureshi has to rely on a party which is embedded in the region has its spread throughout the country.
PML-N offers that.
“Though I am not sure he (Mr Qureshi) will accept this offer, I believe he is seriously thinking about his strategy these days. As he has himself stated that he has very good relations with the Sharifs, he may prefer PML-N to PTI,” said a political figure
hailing from Multan.
