Excise and Taxation Department sealed PTI’s office for tax default

The Excise and Taxation Department (E&T) sealed Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI)’s Jail road office on Tuesday due to the non-payment of property tax. Nevertheless, the office was de-sealed after a while because the orders of Chief Minister.

The tax department claimed that PTI owed a property tax of Rs 350,128 to the institute. Nonetheless, the PTI official articulated that the undue amount was paid on Tuesday and showed the proof to press.

President PTI Lahore, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed pointed this as a cheap tactic of the government officials. He also explained that the government feels insecure after the huge success of PTI on October 30 that has led the Punjab government to unveil dirty politics.

He also claimed that the office was sealed upon the orders of Shahbaz Sharif, otherwise “the E&T Department would not have dared seal the building”.

“The last date was November 23 [today]. The E&T Department sealed our office a day before, which is clear injustice,” Rasheed said.

He also raised objection on the taxed amount saying, “Last year we paid Rs25,000 as tax. This year the government sent us a bill that is more than ten times what we paid last year.”

He told media that the property is owned by his cousin Hameed, who has donated this land to the party and charges no rent for it. With no rent charged, the tax bill does not make any sense, Rasheed added.

He said that PTI demands termination of service of the tax department’s employee, who put the seal on our property, with no amount outstanding. He also said that they will protest against Punjab government on Friday if they don’t fire the responsible person.

On the other hand, E&T inspector, Muhammad Arif contradicted with Rasheed’s allegations by saying “He is trying to mislead the people. We sealed the office as part of our campaign against tax defaulters.”

He also said that if the building is being used by anyone other than the owner, then it automatically fall under the category tenant, which makes them liable for tax payment.
