Nokia might not meet sales target over the holiday season
Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 7:44:28 by Usman KhalidNokia launched its first Windows Phone (WP) based smartphone Lumia 800 late in October this year. Newly appointed CEO and President Stephen Elop decided to say goodbye to the illusive Symbian-based smartphones and plunged into the Windows market with Lumia
series.
However, Mr. Elop’s ideology of boosting Nokia’s sales in the first 2012 quarter might seem to fail as market analysis report that the new phone might not meet its presumed sales targets.
The company publically announced that they have broken the pre-order records and that demand is not expected to retreat into hides when the product hits the shelves.
However, the recent survey stated that Nokia’s target of around 2 million unit sales will not be met by miles. According to the report, the company, if the holiday season in the US and Europe is successful, might sell a quarter of that mark.
If that is true, 500,000 unit sales is not what Mr. Elop would have expected when he undertook the WP mission. Putting all his eggs in the Windows’ basket might be one of the biggest flops in company’s history.
Nokia already has a number of Windows Phone-based smartphones in the pipeline and if a handset like the Lumia 800 is not successful, then they might need to go the distance in developing an entirely new line of phones.
The Lumia 800 is not an awful smartphone in any respect. The phone has the looks that can stand proud among other competitors in the market. It comes with adorable colours to cater to every market demographic. The hardware from curved Gorilla Glass AMOLED
screen down to the single-core processor are ample for a competition with HTCs and iPhones. Moreover, the operating system, WP 7.5 Mango, is the latest release from Windows Phone.
It is still unknown why Nokia could not gouge a big slice of market share when it has a reputation synonymous to durability. It already is second best phone seller in the world, after HTC, of course. However, a stronger verdict can only be constructed after
the Black Friday season is over.
