The PFF’s decision to appoint Serbian, Zaviša Milosavljevi?, as the new coach of the National team has been widely greeted with cheers from the footballing fraternity. So Newspakistan looks at some key points which the trainer should be looking to achieve
in order to improve results.
Selecting on merit and proper scouting
Scouting is a term, which hardly anyone from the football setup pays attention to in Pakistan. The coaches usually pick their favourites and the thought that they would have to go observe talented players is quite absurd. However professional managers emphasize
this point and Zaviša is also likely to work along this track.
It is already reported that the former Lesotho boss has watched several Pakistan Premier League matches and as a result has called up many players who had made a position impression upon him.
Selection based on merit is also one of the biggest hindrances to football’s development in the country. Favoritism is quite common throughout the land and with the likes of Kaleemullah in the team; it is a problem which needs to be solved as quickly as
possible.
Getting the tactics right
Tariq Lutfi’s stint in the National team was highlighted by his bizarre choice of players and even more mind boggling tactics. The KRL manager used attacking strategies in Bangladesh and ended up losing 3-0. However when it was time to go for an all out
attack, he chose to sit back and deploy a very defensive side that drew the 2nd leg in Lahore.
Zaviša will have to be careful in choosing the formations and more importantly who is going to play where. Adnan Ahmed and Atif Bashir should be Pakistan’s number one choice for midfield, while Zeeshan Rehman should slot in as the centre-back.
Utilizing players in their best position will not only improve the overall quality of the team but will also help keep the morale of the team high, as players will get to ply their trade in their preferred position.
If Zaviša can implement these changes, results in favour of the Pakistan team will not be far behind.
