IFFI’s 42nd edition starts in Goa

The award is the 42nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and the event was first inaugurated jointly by the top Bollywood hero Shah Rukh Khan and information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni.
It is also reported that films from all the continents between 1st September 2010 and 31st August 2011 are eligible for the competition. According to latest reports, the event will include 150 movies form
65 countries.
The grand prize for the winner will be the legendary Golden Peacock and a cash prize of Rs. 40,00,000 ($ 90,000 USD approx), which will be shared between a director and the producer. The festival started on November 23 and will
run till December 2, 2011. It is being headed by Shankar Mohan, the director of 42nd edition, who is given the post, officially by the Governement of India.
The festivals attractions include – The Opening Film, the closing night film, 3D Cinema, Documentaries, European Discoveries, Festivals Kaleidoscope, Homages, Lifetime Achievement Award, Panel Discussion, Retrospective, Russian
Classics and Spotlight on Poland.
IFFI, which is one of the most popular film festivals of Asia was first organised in 1952 by the Films Division, Governement of India with the patronage of the first Prime Minister. Although first it was held in Mumbai from January
24 to 1 February 1952 but later it was moved to Madras, Delhi and Calcutta respectively. It included about 40 features and 100 shorts films. The festival was organised in Delhi by Prime Miniser Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on 21 February 1952.
It is held annually in the beach town of Goa, in the Western Coast of the country. The purpose of introducing such an event was to provide a common platform for the cinemas of the world to present the excellence of the film art,
ranging from the contribution to the understanding and appreciation of the film cultures of different nations, representing their own social standards.
Since its inauguration, it is the biggest event of its kind in India. Let’s see what difference this new edition of IFFI brings for its participants as well as viewers.
