Sherry Rehman! A wise replacement

The appointment of former information minister Sherry Rehman as the Pakistan’s new envoy to the United States is a greeting step after the well-connected, Husain Haqqani, resigned from his post over the controversial memo.

Regardless of the controversy of the secret memogate, many believe that Haqqani was representing the country in America in quite a good mode.

Having conflicts with the president on imposing restrictions on the media, Sherry Rehman tendered her resignation as a federal information minister, back in 2009.

However, it is cleared that her appointment now is a completely political move and has been made by the political leadership with the premier ahead in the race.

She was one of the outspoken politicians, as who bravely condemned the assassination of the late Punjab Governor, Salmaan Taseer, by his own guard.

She is a respected figure both in the country as well as abroad. She is eloquent and is expected to be well-received in Washington.

The anticipation is that Sherry Rehman will bond to her ideas and not be ordered to or overawed as she talks issues with the powers in America.

She has a credible personality that may go a long way towards pacifying those who may criticize the selection of a politician for the country’s most important diplomatic designation.

Furthermore, she is a civilian and may have removed the fears that the military wanted to dictate the new envoy.

Her selection may well contribute Pakistan’s future accords with America, especially given the fact that the former ambassador was often criticised by some, as a pro-US representative.

However, it has not been cleared thus far who was behind the alleged memogate, whether Hussain Haqqani himself or the government. There will be an ambiguity even if we accept that Haqqani was behind the memo.

The compliance of the former envoy to seek help from US for a merely internal matter might disgust the liberal bent.

On the other hand, the trials seem baseless and something goaded not by Haqqani’s actions but by the already-held beliefs of those approaching the row.

In this specific case, the media as a whole could have played a positive role, putting aside the sensationalism for a change and focusing instead on trustworthy reporting.
