Sherry Rehman’s appointment as ambassador to US challenged in Lahore High Court

President of Pakistan’s decision to appoint Sherry Rehman as country’s envoy to United States was challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) of Pakistan on Thursday.

The petition was lodged by Advocate Mohammad Azhar Siddique stating that being a member of National Assembly Ms Rehman could not be eligible for a government post. 

The supplicant moreover stated that a case against Ms Rehman for presenting an amendment bill to the Blasphemy Act over was also under hearing with the Lahore High Court.

Sherry Rehma, the former information minister of Pakistan and her political party PPP, has been alleged of committing blasphemy on a local news television program and a petition seeking her disqualification from the national assembly is pending with LHC.

The applicant, Mohammad Azhar Siddique Advocate, requested the Lahore High Court to revoke Sherry Rehman’s appointment as Pakistan’s envoy to the United States.

Sherry Rehman was appointed as Pakistan’s new ambassador to United Sates a day after her predecessor, Hussain Haqani’s resignation in the wake of the memogate scandal. Born in Karachi in 1960 to a prominent Sindhi family, is a Journalist by profession.

In the meanwhile, a local businessman, Fahim Akhtar Gill has also filed a petition against Sherry Rehman’s appointment in the Multan Bench of the Lahore High Court.

The petitioner was of the opinion that Ms Rehman was guilty of committing blasphemy and a hearing against her was pending in the Lahore High Court. Mr Gill maintained that appointment of Sherry Rehman as Pakistan’s ambassador was against the honor and pride
of the people of Islamic republic of Pakistan.

The petitioner requested to court to issue stay order against Ms Rehman’s appointment so that she could not assume duties as envoy to United States.

Ms Rehman, who is also the chairperson of Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), will be the third Pakistan women to assume the role as Pakistan ambassador to United States after Maliha Lodhi and Abida Hussain.
