The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has recently given a statement in which he has affirmed that the government of Pakistan is determined to alleviate the status of women in Pakistani society by empowering them, upgrading their status
, giving them dignity as well as prestige.
The message was sent by the Prime Minister of Pakistan in the light of the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.
While talking about the inadequacies and injustice prevailing in the Pakistani society with regard to women, the Prime Minister of Pakistan identified some key factors. Among these, Yousuf Raza Gillani mentioned the slow economic growth of the country that
affects the financial stability of the women in Pakistani society as it leads to a lack of job opportunities. Not only that, the weak social support systems that are present in the Pakistani society play a major role in suppressing the women and making it
hard from them to be a productive member of the Pakistani society. These two factors, slow economic growth as well as weak social support system, have been identified by the Prime Minister of Pakistan as the two most important factors that affect the women
living in Pakistan directly and most significantly.
Gillani shared his feelings in the following manner: “Curtailed resource flows to these vital areas impact most severely on the vulnerable groups, particularly women and children. This is not acceptable. It offends my religion. It offends my sense of justice
and equity. Above all, it offends common sense. I regard the empowerment of women as my personal mission. In line with the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, the present democratic government has taken a number of steps that signal radical change in
the status of women.”
While talking about the commitment the Pakistani government has with the issues of women in the country, the Prime Minister of Pakistan mentioned the laws that have been enacted in order to give further protection to Pakistani women. These are the Protection
against Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2010 as well as The Prevention of Anti-Women Practices Bill 2008.
