Qureshi yet to make the final decision
Friday, November 25th, 2011 3:53:03 by Sajjad HussainWith the Shah Mehmood Quereshi and Nawaz Sharif meeting bringing no tangible results, the guessing game as to which party shall the former foreign minister join continues in full swing. Shah Mehmood Qureshi is scheduled to address a rally in Ghotki on 27th
November which – some observers say, will finally put an end to the speculations.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi was reported to have said that he would announce his future strategy in the coming days. Previously it was the important meeting with the president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz which was thought to be game changer, now same importance
is being attached to the Ghotki rally.
Imran Khan is also reported to be present there; a presence which might well be interpreted, if not construed, as the impending alliance finally materializing. Both the leaders are yet to formally talk on the matter as there might have been contacts behind
the scene. Interestingly, the Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaaf had earlier asserted that Qureshi would join the party soon.
The kind of welcome Nawaz accorded to Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Raiwand, and the enthusiasm shown by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, were apparently a sign of what was in the air: His announcement to be part of the party. But it never came into being.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi is expected to bring a considerable change in the south Punjab region once he makes an alignment with any party. The fact that the Pakistan People’s Party, which Qureshi belonged to, and the Pakistan Muslim League-Q have a joint number
of 36 seats here, whereby PML-N has 12, the PML-N obviously wants to turn the tide.
How does that party do that? To successfully woo Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the party. This is an attempt which has to produce any favourable result for the PML-N. The Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaaf, on the other hand, has yet to make a workable plan yet to get Qureshi
on its side.
As the political temperature continues to rise, there is an equal amount of uncertainty too as to what the next move of Qureshi would be after his resignation from PPP after 18 years’ affiliation.
