Failure of Pakistan film industry – Part One

Film is arguably the most influencing source of communication around the world. Successful nations use the medium of film to educate and create awareness among their people and to promote their culture domestically as well as internationally. The medium
of film is one of the reasons behind the vertical flow of information that we are witnessing around the globe, as the strong countries impose their culture on the weaker nations through films.

Pakistan film industry was in a much better shape before the late 1970’s. The themes were much softer and romantic and they used to focus on the issues of the society and were in the frame of reference of a middle class man. Pakistan film industry produced
some of the great comedians like Munawar Zareef, Rangeela, Nanha and Lehri. Even the much stronger Indian film industry never had comedians like them. We had heroes like Waheed Murad, Mohamad Ali, Nadeem, Sudheer etc and Noor Jehan and Sabeeha Khanum were
the leading heroines. Apart from the cast, Pakistan film industry had very good technicians and music directors as well like Khawaja Khursheed Anwer. But since then we can see a continuous decline of the Pakistan film industry.

Pakistan film industry has miserably failed to use this medium as a mean of serious communication. We hardly come across movies which are made to create awareness in the society or to promote the culture of Pakistan. Let us have a look at some of the major
reasons behind the failure of Pakistan film industry.

Right now there is no proper film academy in Pakistan, whereas all around the world the art of film is educated properly. There are complete acting schools and even the technicians are also properly trained. That is why Hollywood and Bollywood are able to
produce professionals who can excel in their required fields.

One of the major reasons behind the failure of Pakistan film industry in my opinion is poor religious interpretation by the “Mulla’s”. Working in films is not thought of good by the decent families in our country. This is the reason why we do not see enough
educated people coming into this industry which is already lacking professionalism.

In my opinion, films of international standard can be made while staying in the boundaries presented by Islam and it is not necessary to have vulgar or nude scenes in a movie.

It is quite obvious that we cannot expect illiterate people to compete internationally.

Working in movies is not considered good by “Mullas” and this is a wrong interpretation of religion by them.. I’m sorry to say but i guess you are lost when it comes to interpreting the truth of Islam.
