No more business as usual in Pakistan-U.S relations, says Pakistani Prime Minister
Monday, November 28th, 2011 7:10:14 by Haris AnsariPakistani Prime Minister, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, has clearly issued a warning to U.S after NATO aircraft killed two dozen Pakistani soldiers. He asserted that “no more business as usual” in Pakistan- U.S relations.
Gilani said in an interview that Pakistan was re-evaluating its relationship with the United States. He also added that the South Asian nation wanted to maintain its relationship with the U.S as long as there is mutual respect and respect for Pakistani sovereignty.
The Pakistani PM highlighted incidents such as the killings of Pakistani soldiers and a U.S rain in Pakistan to kill Osama bin laden as violations of his country’s sovereignty.
The prime minister also said Pakistan had not yet decided whether to boycott next month’s Bonn conference on the future of Afghanistan.
Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas, Pakistani military spokesman, in a separate interview denied about the reports that Pakistani troops opened fire first on the NATO helicopters. He stressed that the helicopters opened fire first on Pakistani military checkpoints.
He also added that the soldiers notified Pakistan military headquarters about the incident, which informed the NATO authorities immediately.
NATO’s secretary general earlier said that it was a tragic and unintended incident and pledged to ensure that such attacks do not reoccur.
