Pakistan needs to determine its friends and foes

Pakistan lost 24 soldiers on Sunday, November 27, when NATO opened cross-border fire, which added fuel to the already heated relations between U.S. and Pakistan.

NATO officials labelled that the entire turn of events on Sunday was unintentional from their side because they only had responded back to the cross border fire. Whatever the situation may be, Pakistan had to bear the full burden of the unforeseen loss.
It has been announced by NATO’s officials that the investigation teams will be set up to track down the root cause to the deadly incident which took away a quarter of a century’s count of Pakistanis officials stationed to guard the borders  from  foreign
threats.

While expressing his thoughts about tragic incident on Sunday, a U.S. official in Washington, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said “All of this is extremely murky and needs to be investigated. Our goal today is … that the investigation gets mounted
in a way that is confidence-building on all sides.”

It is confusing because it is still unclear who the real culprits are because often militants attack from the Pakistani borderline, which is identified to be porous in nature and as NATA led troops are not authorised to cross over the Pakistan’s demarcation
under NATO’s mandate, nothing for sure could be ascertained.

One thing is clear, that with this incident, U.S. efforts to improve ties with Pakistan are all down the drain.
