The new album of legendary musician Elvis Costello is scheduled to be released on December 6. It will be a 3-disc box equipped with rare photos of the artist, autographed memorabilia, posters and much more. Most of the songs on the album were recorded during
a two-night show earlier this year. Tracks such as “Watching the Detectives” and “Everyday I Write the Book” have already created a great buzz among fans. It seems like Costello’s new album would be real treat for music lovers and it will make a wonderful
present for anyone during the holiday season.
But the irony is that Elvis Costello does not want people to buy it.
In a recent post on the official website of Elvis Costello, the fans were advised to rather download the album instead of buying it. The actual message which appeared on the website was “Steal This Record”. The basic message of the plea to fans was
- – the record label priced the box way too high
- – you should spend your money on purchasing Louis Armstrong instead
- – you should download it anyway.
The album is officially priced at $262.46, which can be pre-ordered from Amazon for a slightly less expensive $202.64.
Original message on the website was as followed: “Unfortunately, we at www.elviscostello.com find ourselves unable to recommend this lovely item to you as the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire. All our attempts to have this number revised
have been fruitless but rather than detain you with tedious arguments about morality, panache and book-keeping – when there are really bigger fish to filet these days – we are taking the following unusual step.”
In the first place, they say that if you’re going to spend money, you should make a better deal with ten-disc box set “Ambassador to Jazz,” from the great Louis Armstrong.
Secondly, they recommend that you may choose to wait until they release the separate parts of the box set – the CD, DVD and vinyl – which will be available for pretty reasonable price next year.
If, on the other hand, you should still want to catch the content on new album, you can get access through unconventional means such as download. So there you have it. Elvis Costello and the Imposters think that you are being overcharged for their stuff
and would prefer that you download it.
