The English film Director Ken Russell, who is known for his pioneering work in the media entertainment and for his flamboyant and controversial style, died at the age of 84. Russell’s son Alex Verney-Elliott confirmed the news of his death as he died in
hospital on Sunday.
It was believed that Ken Russell, who lived in the Southern part of the England in Lymington, has been seriously ill for quite some time and his condition became worse on Sunday when he was hospitalized. According to Alex, Russell died after a series of
strokes.
Ken Russell’s films were mostly based on either lives of composers or other works of arts. Russell is best known for his Oscar-winning film Women in Love, The Who’s Tommy, The Devils and a science fiction film with the name Altered States.
Due to his unique, innovative and blunt style of directing, Ken Russell was regarded as a brave director who broke down the barriers of censorship for many people in the English film industry. In the final stages of his directing career, Russell used an
experimental approach and made film on very unusual and strange topics which includes Lion’s Mouth and Revenge of the Elephant Man.
The famous British film critic Mark Kermode stated that Ken Russell provided a breakthrough for the British cinema which opened the door for the people to think differently
"(Russell), somebody who proved that British cinema didn’t have to be about kitchen-sink realism—it could be every bit as flamboyant as Fellini. In the final period of his directing careers he makes what have been described as very strange experimental
films such as Lion’s Mouth and Revenge of the Elephant Man, and they which are considered to be as edgy and out there as some of the work he made in the 1970s" Mark said.
