Bahria University took on the Military College of Signals (MCS) in their second round match of the 1st Muhammad Ali Jinnah Football tournament in a match where both teams were evenly matched.
MCS had won their first match comfortably, as did Bahria University who had disposed of KICKSIT with a mauling putting five goals past the keeper. However, this encounter proved a completely different story altogether.
Without veteran, Areeb Khan on the bench, Bahria were short of options on the bench, something that would come back to haunt them as the match wore on.
Once again it was the opposition who got off on the stronger foot, yet the Bahrian defensive pairing of Talha and Musa Afridi held off the early waves of attacks as the side began to settle.
MCS seemed to be everywhere at once on the pitch and a misplaced pass by Ahmed Saeed Butt found an opposing player who in turn found a teammate who managed to squeeze the ball through the narrowest of gaps from the edge of the area and give his side an early
lead.
Rather than let their heads drop Bahria only seemed more desperate to get the equaliser but by the end of the first half, a number of opportunities had been squandered to leave Bahria trailing by one goal.
To make matters worse, star striker, Ahmed Saeed Butt, limped off the field injured and the lack of options on the bench meant that the captain, Faizan Sameer Malik, pushed himself forward in the role of a makeshift striker.
That move did not pay off as well as Bahria would have hoped as chance after glorious chance went begging. The build up play was solid, as was the defence and midfield, yet it seemed that lady luck was smiling on MCS that morning as they held on.
MCS had a few chances of their own to put the match beyond doubt but desperate defending from the Bahrians meant that when the final whistle blew the score was still 1-0 and meant the end of Bahria University Team A’s chances of lifting the inaugural trophy.
