Headstart edged out by Chandbagh in friendly sports encounter

Islamabad School champions, Headstart, were edged out by Chandbagh in a series of friendly sports encounters played in Sheikupura.

The Islamabad-based school specially travelled to Lahore in order to go head-to-head against their rivals and a series of cricket, football and basketball fixtures were arranged by the administration of both sides.

Chandbagh welcomed their counterparts with open arms and duly obliged by providing accommodation as well as graciously offering their guests dining facilities for all meals.

However reputation of the home side, as well as Headstart was on the line and it was no surprise that the sports fixtures turned out to be ferociously contested affairs despite being termed as friendly games.

In basketball, Chandbagh proved to be too much for the visitors and easily cruised to victory in an almost one sided game. Led by captain Hamza Siddiqui, Headstart tried their best to match their opponents but their efforts were in vain, as the ‘Cbstians’
steam rolled them 54-16.

Headstart’s cricket team also suffered the same fate and were all out on 90 runs despite their considerable training before the much awaited match.

Known as the ‘Invincibles’ due to the feats they achieved last season, there was a lot of pressure to perform on the Headstart Football team to deliver against Chandbagh. And for the majority of the 70 minutes, they didn’t disappoint.

Boosted by the return of influential players such as Shadman Khan and Baqar Ali Hassan, the Snow Leopards performed admirably but were undone by a series of poor goalkeeping errors.

Due to the absence of the first and second choice shot stoppers, Alamdar Murtaza’s men had to be content with the services of Saqib and unluckily for them, the plan backfired emphatically.

The goalkeeper should have saved the first shot, but his error in judgment saw the home team take the lead after a well contested first half. Shortly after, another gaffe followed as Saqib failed to catch a seemingly harmless long-ball and it ended up in
the back of net after striking his leg.

While Headstart pressed on for a late consolation, it proved not be their day, as Chandbagh were able to preserve their lead until the final whistle.

Although in terms of results, the Islamabad-based outfit failed to make their mark, the tour has initiated a new friendship with their fellow school and a corresponding visit is expected from CBS next year.
