Pakistan might face vegetable shortage in near future
Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 9:56:26 by Umair HassanExperts on agriculture along with vegetable exporters have warned the government and local authorities that Pakistan might see a drastic shortage of vegetables in the near future, more likely in coming 10 year’s time.
Co-chairman of the Pakistan Fruits and Vegetable Exporter, Importers and Merchants Association (PFVA) Waheed Ahmed told the media in detail about the entire current situation and the situation that is about to bring more complications in the future for Pakistan.
He said, “Going forward, exports would decline if yield is not increased. We will become fruits and vegetable importing country in the next ten years, If you improve yield the country can earn up to $7 billion in fruit and vegetable exports, However, currently
we are not on the right track. Every year 2.2m tons of vegetables and 2.8-3m tons of fruits go to waste during and after harvest, This is too big a loss – roughly 30 percent of Pakistan’s total vegetable production, and about 40 percent of fruits. Thus, there
is a need for organizing training programmes and demonstrations on production-cum-marketing technology for increasing standard of products.”
Waheed Ahmed’s media interaction was certainly a big point forward in realising the need to aware general public that Pakistan is now in slight danger feeding its nation properly.
