It has recently been announced by the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yusuf Raza Gilani that the U.S. have been given the deadline of December 11th to vacate the Shamsi Airbase. The deadline has been given to the U.S. by the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee
of Pakistan.
The ultimatum has been made in the light of the NATO airstrikes that hit the border posts of Pakistan on Saturday. The unprovoked attack kept on going for a period of almost two hours. The aftermath of the aggression was the tragic death of 24 Pakistani
soldiers. Despite the fact that the NATO forces were contacted by their Pakistani counterparts in a plea to stop the airstrikes, the violence continued on.
Previously, the cabinet of Pakistan decided not to attend the Bonn conference on Afghanistan that is scheduled to take place in the coming month. Pakistan was considered to be the key player in the conference as it shares its border with Afghanistan and
has previously been involved in matters of strategic interest.
Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Giliani expressed himself on the grievous issue by commenting in the following manner: “Unless, we are given assurances for our security, sovereignty, integrity, dignity, honour and self-respect, we cannot attend Bon conference.
Pakistan wanted peace and stability in Afghanistan which is our neighbour. Instability in any neighbour leads to disturbance in the neighbourhood. Therefore, we can support Afghanistan only if the Afghan issue is resolved under political reconciliation with
its neighbours.”
After the tragic incident, the relations between the U.S. and Pakistan reached a significant low than they ever have over the past decade. The unprovoked aggression within the border of Pakistan and on it soldiers has triggered intense hostility in the public
of Pakistan which is being mirrored by the strong steps that the government of Pakistan is taking as a consequence.
In response to the attacks, NATO has given the statement that the matter will be given top priority and will be investigated to the fullest degree. Apart from that, no reconciliatory measures have yet been taken in order to compensate for the loss that Pakistan
has suffered.
