Digital Divide – Part Two

Technology is always changing and progressing and along with that, so does its use in education. There used to be a time when technology was used only by teachers as a means for teaching, but now its use has fallen upon students as well. As far as teaching
is concerned technology is used in various ways.
About ten years ago teachers would use “chalk” to write on a blackboard whenever students needed to see something in writing. Then technology evolved. Just about 6 years ago teachers used overhead projectors, and instead of chalk on a blackboard
it was overhead markers on a see-through plastic sheet projected on an overhead screen, once again technology evolved.
One of the root-cause of all the problems around the world is the un-even flow of information around the world. Countries who have all the facilities can impose their culture on the smaller countries, which lack these facilities because the bigger countries
have all the sources to communicate whereas the 3rd world countries do not have the sources to communicate around the world about the problems they are facing.
One of the major reasons behind the vertical flow of information around the world is Digital Divide. Countries which are equipped with the latest technologies can communicate around the world in a much better way than those countries or places which lack
internet facilities. For example after the 9/11 incident, America conveyed its message and communicated around the world through all sorts of communication including internet. Before attacking Afghanistan, they were able to convince the rest of the world that
terrorism is a big threat to the world and they need to deal with terrorism through force.
On the other hand, Afghanistan was not able to communicate around the world because they were not at all equipped with the latest technologies and internet was not a common source of communication in Afghanistan. Taliban failed to convey their point of view
to the rest of the world and as a result the whole world supported the so-called war against terror.
The increasing gap of Digital Divide is a big source of promoting un-equality among countries as well as within the countries. Level playing field is not offered to everyone in the current era of the world.
