14 August, 1947, an auspicious date in the history, saw the partition of Indian subcontinent into two postcolonial states of Pakistan and India. Though it ended arguably 350 years of British reign in India but the subcontinent
has seen immense bloodshed and enormous sacrifices in the process.
“Thandi Deewarein”, a tele-film directed by Ehtashamuddin tackles a love story in the aftermath of the partition, starring Juggan Kazim and Reza Kazim in a lead role, which will be released in the first quarter of next year.
Ehtashamuddin, the tele-film director has done some noticeable work in the past on the heated topic, apart from usual make-ups, has seen the partition of the subcontinent from a different perspective and has presented the audience
with a love story in the midst of a devastating and painful journey of people crossing the borders.
“Directing these stories was to show interest both in India as well as Pakistan. My main aim was to negate this fact: partition has always been viewed as only one nation’s suffering, which is incorrect. Every other common man on
the street suffered, it was a gory partition.” The promising director was quoted as saying.
The much anticipated tele-film, tells the story of a 14-year-old Hindu girl (kaanta; played by Juggan) who is abducted by a Muslim male (Reza Kazim) in the rush of partition. After eight years she was found by Pakistani High Commission,
which was repatriated to her native land.
However, Kaanta sees a little charm in re-uniting with her parents because she starts missing her left out children and a husband at a Pakistani village. She could not resist the loneliness and was helped by a friendly neighbour
on her way back to Pakistan.
Some love stories have already been released on this topic before (Ghaddar, partition, Veer Zara etc.) but the director is hopeful that his latest venture can promise a good time, fully packed with agonies and emotions of a woman
that sees her life in dark without love despite the love itself started with a kidnapping incident.
The tele-film was screened at the Goethe Institut, a German cultural institution, last month where the director of the Institut, Marcus Lutz, admitted that they are planning to publish the partition anthology very soon.
