Relatives of martyred Pakistan soldiers seek justice

As Islamabad and Washington argue about the sequence of events that led to the unprovoked NATO attack on November 26 that killed two dozen Pakistani troops and injured other 13, the relatives of martyred soldiers are struggling with the pain and agony
of losing their loved ones killed by their nominal ally.

The relatives of the two dozen Pakistan soldiers who lost their lives to an unprovoked, deadly Nato air attack last weekend have sought justice urging the Pakistan government to stick to its uncompromising stance.

Azra Bashir, the mother of 23-year-old Captain Usman Bashir, has asked the Pakistan soldiers to avenge the killing of his son, who also left behind a wife and a two-month-old daughter.

"I want to tell our soldiers that they should avenge the killing of Usman and other soldiers like him," said Mrs. Bashir in an interview in her home in Lahore.

Mrs. Bashir had spoken to her son Usman on phone, only hours before NATO airstrikes killed him and 23 other Pakistani troops holed up in a freezing border outpost on the dangerous Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The call of Mrs. Bashir for revenge has been echoed in daily protests held in Pakistan’s major cities. Pakistan army, which has lost 3000 of its soldiers in the ongoing war against terrorism since 2001, has also fueled the hard line by accusing NATO
of a "deliberate act of aggression."

"How long will we sacrifice our youths, our soldiers for others?" said Capt. Usman Bashir’s father, Bashir Ahmed. "This is not our war. This is their war," he asserted.

Government of Pakistan had immediately closed all the supply routes of Nato from its territory besides giving US a deadline of 15 days to evacuate Shamsi airbase. The federal cabinet of Pakistan, in its meeting under PM Gilani’s chairmanship also decided
to boycott next week’s crucial Bonn conference on Afghanistan in a protest to the blatant Nato attack.
