Burma’s opposition politician, Aung San Suu Kyi, is hopeful of revival of democracy in the country after her landmark meeting US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, claiming that the green light is now visible on the horizon.

Kyi and Clinton met for the first time at Yangon yesterday. The two renowned women politicians of the world discussed some key issue pertaining to Burma’s democratic transition and certain cultural and historical prospects that bind the two nations.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Kyi said, “It is, I think, a historic moment for both our countries because we hope from this meeting we will be able to proceed towards renewing the ties of friendship and understanding that bound our countries together
since independence.”

She further told, “I am very confident that if we work together there will be no turning back from the road to democracy. More needed to be done by the new military-backed regime, “but we hope to get there as soon as possible.”

Kyi has been struggling for establishing civil rule in the country from the platform of National League For Democracy since last two decades. She first competed for general elections in 1990. Her party won at least 81 percent of the seats but the then military
rulers detained her so that she could not form an independent and democratic government.

After enduring house arrest for at least 20 years, Kyi was released on November 13, 2010. Now, she is again active in national politics and hopes for clean sweep in the next elections.

In recognition of Kyi’s life-long services and struggle for the cause of democracy, she was blessed with Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. Apart from this, she had won many other international awards including Rafto Prize, Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought,
Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding and International Simon Bolivar Prize.

Some political analysts opine that Kyi’s meeting with Clinton is likely to usher a new era of democratic rule for Burma as the latter has pledged to help the former in her long-cherished cause.
