Pakistan has been recently asked by the White House one more time to participate in the Bonn conference on Afghanistan that is scheduled to take place this month in Germany. Pakistan had previously announced to boycott the conference in light of the NATO
attacks that took place on the Pakistani border posts on Saturday.
The Press Secretary of the White House, Jay Carney commented on the critical issue in the following manner while speaking at his daily news briefing: “We urge them to attend the conference in Bonn, and are working with them on our overall relationship. We
understand that this is complicated by events, as has been the case at various times this year. It is an important relationship that we continue to work on, because it’s in the interest of the American people and our national security that we continue to work
on it.”
The attacks took the form of airstrikes that went on for almost two hours and caused the death of 24 Pakistani soldiers. The NATO forces were contacted by their Pakistani counter parts in order to make the strikes stop but there was no such response from
the other side.
The statement that came from some anonymous Afghan top sources was that the Afghan commandos were carrying out a mission with the U.S. forces near the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan when they experienced fire coming from the Pakistani side in response
of which the attack was made.
However, the Pakistani forces maintain that the aggression was unprovoked and continued on despite the pleas of the Pakistani soldiers with the NATO forces. NATO has on the other hand, given its assurance that the matter is tragic and will be given top priority.
NATO has also said that it will investigate the incident to the fullest.
There has been strong reaction from the Pakistani public which is being mirrored by the Pakistani government which has caused the relations between the United States and Pakistan to reach their lowest in the past decade. Apart from boycotting the Bonn conference,
Pakistan has also given the U.D the ultimatum to vacate the Shamsi airbase.
