Some Sledging Incidents in Cricket World Cup matches
Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 12:23:11 by Asad NazirSledging is an annoying bustle in cricket on the field. It works to irritate the opponents by unexpected conducts, and abusing/swapping cruel words. The Bowler gets help from the sledging to halt the batsman’s concentration level
and makes him panicky to pick his wicket. Meanwhile, the batsman tries to give the impression to the bowler that he can smash him
Below are some World Cup sledging incidents:
World Cup 1992
Javed Miandad v Kiran More.
In Cricket World Cup 1992, the game between India and Pakistan at Sydney, legendary batsman Javed Miandad was batting. And Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More was making needless appeals to disturb Miandad.
The great batsman requested Indian wicketkeeper to stay silent. More didn’t regard Miandad’s request. Even the master batsman’s complaint to the umpire also did not work. When nothing was working the Pakistani batsman had done
something very surprising and funny.
After playing a short he flashed back to the crease, starting leaping on the pitch, and appealing for the wicket just like Kiran More was doing.
After that Miandad’s act prevented wicketkeeper to make pointless appeals.
World Cup 1996
Venkatesh Prasad v Amir Sohail.
The Pakistani opener Amir Sohail has also been engaged in Sledging, as once he tried to execute it in the quarter-final of the ICC World Cup 1996 against the Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad.
The Pakistani batsmen were smashing Indian bowlers, as they had an airborne start while chasing the target.
Amir showed the boundary ropes to Prasad with his bat after hammering a cracking four through the covers.
The Opener wanted to prove there is no leniency for Prasad, as he is going to smash him right on the next ball.
However, sledging did not work for Amir because he mislaid his concentration and gave away his wicket to the bowler, and he was on his way to pavilion.
World Cup 1999
Shane Warne v Daryll Cullinan.
The all time great leg spinner Shane Warne was famous in mocking the opposition batsmen. The Aussies bowler perfectly conquered Daryll Cullinan in the last match of the super sixes phase of the World Cup 1999 against South Africa.
Warne had given an irritating welcome to Cullinan on wicket by saying that he was waiting to disgrace him for two years. Proteas batsman replied him; it seems that he spent these two years while eating.
Ultimately, Warne bowled out Cullinan in the match, which helped to Australia win the battle reaching in the semi-final of the event.
Shoaib Akhtar v Steve Waugh
Rawalpindi express Shoaib Akhtar had always been renowned for his short-temperament.
In the World Cup 1999’s match against Australia, Akthar’s tried to put pressure world’s calmest skipper Steve Waugh with the help of his aggressive body gestures.
After showing this aggression the fast bowler bowled Waugh on 49.
World Cup 2003
Kumar Sangakkara v Shaun Pollock.
The game between South Africa and Sri Lanka in the ICC World Cup 2003, Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara was the sledger this time to make his impact on match’s result.
When South African captain Shaun Pollock came at crease, Sangakkara said; “How is the pressure, skipper?”
Furthermore he added; “He is going to let his whole country down, lads. Oh, the weight of expectations. 42 million people depending on Shaun.”
The comments made by Sri Lankan wicket-keeper established a stuff pressure on Pollock, as he was dismissed on 25 runs at crucial time of the match when South Africa required 120 runs on 125 balls with five remaining wickets. Sri
Lanka kicked out the Proteas from that event after defeating in this match.
World Cup 2011
Shaun Tait v Tilkaratne Dilshan.
In the group match of World Cup’11, the Australian bowler Shaun Tait successfully attempted to repel the focus of Sri Lanka’s flying starter, Tilkaratne Dilshan. The dasher showed his anger while playing the next ball, got an outside
edge and wicket keeper safely caught him behind the stamps.
Brad Haddin v Umar Akmal, Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi.
The Aussies wicketkeeper batsman Brad Haddin conflicted with Umar Akmal against Pakistan, and started the same with Shahid Afridi and Younis Khan while they wanted to avert the conflict.
