Sunday, December 4th, 2011 2:51:36 by Usman KhalidPort Grand Food and Entertainment Complex’s majestic opening in May was thought to be an overstatement as to catering to Karachi public, which were going through an aggravated ordeal in the region. The political and sectarian violence was in its worst shape
in the City of Lights’ history. But the bold step taken by the Karachi Port Trust to develop a promenade for the public seems to have justified their statement.
Built on the Napier Mole Bridge, the complex spans over an area of roughly 200,000 sq. ft. It houses a variety of articles from shops to restaurants to a cinema. KPT has reached a pinnacle of excellence in every aspect that can mesmerize the anguished public
of the city that is populated by around 20 Million residents from all around the country.
The place gets visited by 5000 tourists every single day and they remain the denizens of such a captivating place for hours, the main reason being, it caters to every social demographic possible.
“Port Grand is something fresh for the city, very aesthetically pleasing and unique,” says Yasmine Ibrahim, a 25- year-old Lebanese American who is helping set up a student affairs office at a new university in Karachi.
The most intriguing part of the place is the augmentation to the beauty by an ornate of a 150-year-old banyan tree.
Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani described the complex as “out of this world” and “like Dubai” in a Nov. 30 visit.
That should be natural beauty, of course. Adding to the place are contemporary attractions like shops and stalls that offer from latest fashion in the market to ornaments of silverware and pottery.
There are restaurants that offer gourmet foods with a variety that provides for taste buds belonging to area from the Western hemisphere to the Eastern.
A state-of-the-art cinema is in place that features the latest Hollywood movies; latest being The Adventures of Tintin and most recent instalment of Twilight movie-series.
The reason behind this successful venture by the Port Authority, according to the KPT themselves, is the growing literacy rate, not in terms of education only but internet and western culture. In spite of the bayed relationship between the US and Pakistan
in recent days, the public seem to understand the true reasons and the subjects to address in that regard.
