Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has refused US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton’s request to reconsider the boycott decision of Pakistan from Bonn meeting on Afghanistan.
Hilary called Gilani on Saturday but the Prime Minister turned down her request by saying that it is not possible at the moment. The conference will start on Monday.
The Prime Minister told Hilary that the Parliamentary Committee on National Security has supported the boycott move just three days ago, thus it is impossible for him to alter the decision.
He articulated that the Parliament is obsessed with the conditions of cooperation with US and has demanded clarity of relationship with US. However, she conveyed her sympathy over the death of Pakistan soldiers in recent US attack.
The Pakistani government took the decision of boycott as a protest against the recent US attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
“The US has the highest regard for Pakistan’s sovereignty. This incident should not be allowed to jeopardise the bilateral relationship,” said Hilary.
Moreover, Afghan President Hamid Karzai also telephoned Prime Minister Gilani on Wednesday and requested him to review the boycott decision, but the Prime Minister also refused his request.
“We think it would be regrettable if Pakistan were not to attend this conference. We think it’s important for the region, it’s important for the neighbourhood, it’s important that we all work to put Afghanistan on a square and solid footing. Our engagement
continues,” US official said.
“We think that cooperation with Pakistan on a variety of fronts, to include counterterrorism, is essential. We realise the bumps in the road that we’ve experienced over the past several months, but we’re going to work very hard with our Pakistani counterparts
to get over this latest bump in the road,” he added.
On the other hand, after consistent and unauthorised air attacks US administration still expects from Pakistan that the recent kill of Pakistani soldiers should not cause tension between the Pak-US relationships.
US consider its relationship with Pakistan “absolutely critical and essential” and think that the strength of any relationship depends on how they handle disagreements.
