Clinton urges Pakistan to attend Bonn

The U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has recently spoken to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani. The telephonic conversation that took place between the two was an effort from the American side to build the worse state in which the American
and Pakistan relations find themselves after the NATO airstrikes that took place on two Pakistani border posts, killing 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Among other steps that Pakistan has taken in response to the NATO airstrikes that have been termed by the country’s military as “unprovoked act of blatant aggression”, the cabinet of Pakistan has decided that the country will not be making an appearance
in the Bonn conference on Afghanistan.

Ms. Clinton tried to persuade the Prime Minister of Pakistan to take part in the Bonn conference as Pakistan is one of the key players in the matter. Pakistan has been valuable both strategically and otherwise in matters where Afghanistan has been involved.
Therefore, Pakistan boycotting the conference that is scheduled to take place in Germany can have severe consequences on the success of the conference.

Hilary Clinton expressed herself in the following manner regarding the U.S. and Pakistan relationship: “This incident should not be allowed to jeopardise the bilateral relationship. Pakistan and U.S. have common interests.”

The State Department in Washington released the following statements regarding the telephonic conversation that Hilary Clinton had with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani: “She reiterated America’s respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty and commitment to working
together in pursuit of shared objectives on the basis of mutual interest and mutual respect.”

The NATO airstrikes that were made on the Pakistani border posts lasted for a period of two hours. The NATO forces were contacted during the process by their Pakistani counterparts in order to stop the strikes but the fire did not stop. There is strong reaction
in the Pakistani public regarding the matter and hostilities towards America have grown among the public. The Pakistani government has also taken up the matter in extremely serious tones. However, NATO has not yet taken a stance, having said that a full investigation
will be carried out regarding the matter.
