Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut movie, In the Land of Blood and Honey, has come under scrutiny after Croatian journalist; James Braddock claimed that the film’s plot has been taken from an article he wrote four years back.
The movie takes the story of the Bosnian war, where a Serbian soldier gets romantically involved with a Bosnian woman who his held captive in the camp. Braddock basis for the suit lies in the primary plot, which he says follows a similar pattern to his published
work.
"The subject work’s main female character is subject to continuous abuse and rape by soldiers and officers in the camp. In addition to being raped continuously by soldiers and officers, she is forced to become a servant at the camp headquarters, a duty assumed
by very few of the captives," the suit reads.
"The Motion Picture’s main female character is also subject to continuous rape by soldiers and officers in the camp and subsequently becomes a servant at camp headquarters."
However, Jolie seems satisfied with content of the film and feels that the law suit is just part of course of her first directorial adventure. While talking to 24 Frames, Jolie said, "its par for the course. It happens on almost every film."
The movie has also faced criticism over the depiction of a Muslim women falling in love with a soldier. Despite such controversies, the script was given the green light and filming started in Bosnia. Jolie sympathized with the women feeling vulnerable over
such topic.
"I felt sympathy for people for whom these issues are so sensitive," she said. "But when you’re coming at something because you care so much about an area, especially women in that area, as I was, and you know the themes of the film are violence against
women, then to be accused of the opposite hurts. You feel a little sickened by it."
