IOM launches the World Migration Report 2011

Geneva, Switzerland – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched the 2011 World Migration Report on Tuesday, 6 December 2011.

Following its tradition of having migrants, humanitarian workers and volunteers around the world on board, the organization had an open invitation for all of them to watch the report launching ceremony live via webcast.

The launch was planned to take place during the 100th Session of the IOM Council in Geneva, which also marked IOM’s 60th Anniversary. With still having conflicts like the one in Afghanistan, Sudan and Syria, which have been generating tens of thousands of
migrants around the globe, the IOM’s work is still being felt relevant. Thus, the expectations from its report are high and the experts are of the view that it will significantly help in surfacing studies and findings which will help in mitigating the vows
of the migrants worldwide.

In this year’s ceremony, while focusing on the theme "Communicating Effectively About Migration," the 2011 World Migration Report noted that migrants’ voices must be heard in today’s all too often biased, polarized and negative debate on migration.

The report called for a fundamental shift in the way we communicate about migration, especially during economic downturns when political discourse, media reports and public opinion on the nature, purpose and socio-economic impact of migration tend to be
negative.

The report also includes a review of migration trends and major policy issues in 2010/2011.

In celebration of IOM’s 60th anniversary, a special section of the report was dedicated to a historical look at work of the Organization, in terms of its policy and its operations.

A ten-year statistical overview of IOM’s programmes completed the picture of the organization’s historical and decisive work.

Interestingly, the international organization for migration’s report is available online, however, it is not for free and people and humanitarian organizations working worldwide will have to buy it for a price that is deemed rather high in the underdeveloped
and developing countries which constitute a major part of migrants.

In order to enhance its outreach, it could have been more beneficial for the common good of the people if this report could be downloaded for free.
