Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F)’s Senator, Azam Sawati Wednesday resigned from his party and the Senate as protest against rampant corruption and worsening political, economic situation in the country.
However, sources close to him stated that he took this step to secure his political future and will join hands with Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The sources further informed that, Azam Swati alongside his brother and other political personalities of Hazara will announce his future affiliation with the PTI, on December 15. Imran Khan is scheduled to address a public rally in Haripur same day.
Speaking to the media, Swati stated that he had no differences with his party, offering thanks to JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman. “I resigned from the Senate due to corruption and security threats to the country,” Swati explained.
Swati, who also served as a Minister of Science and Technology, said the corrupt government was destroying the national institutions such as PIA, Pakistan Steel Mills and Pakistan Railways.
He further said that people had given the government mandate to work for the prosperity and stability of the country but Pakistan was suffering from those tasked to protect it.
He said that top officials and many ministers of the incumbent government are corrupt. “Nothing but corruption is everywhere,” Swati held.
Without naming Makhdoom Amin Faheem, he said that millions of rupees were found from a minister’s account in a scam but he was still a minister and had no shame.
The Senator maintained that all the lawmakers should resign from the parliament, as it became meaningless and ineffective. He urged all the parliamentarians and members of JUI-F to resign from the Senate and the National Assembly.
Swati continued that the president’s address to the joint session of the parliament was like a slap on face of the country. In his view, he did not want to be a part of the so-called democratic set up and the ineffectual parliament.
He maintained that the plight of the country has been deteriorated to the extent that corruption and lawlessness prevails throughout the country.
In his opinion, the Senate in such circumstance has failed to play its effective role, and therefore he cannot sit in the useless house. “Following the revelation of memogate scam, every Pakistani will have to ponder about the future of the country,” he
added.
It is worth highlighting here that Azam Sawati’s tenure will be ended form the Senate by March 2011. A few days ago, the JUI-F also issued a show cause notice after he rendered controversial statements.
