Zardari suffered a minor heart attack but he will not quit, confirms minister

Minister of human rights, Mustafa Khokhar, has confirmed that President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, suffered a minor heart attack on Monday evening.

Zardari was immediately taken to Dubai on an ambulance airplane where he underwent several tests and reports in the media have suggested that the Co-Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is ready to step down from his Presidential
post.

Shuja Nawaz, the director of the South Asia centre at the Atlantic Council, hinted that Zardari’s health condition might be a signal of a major change in the government. Zardari is under immense pressure since the memo gate revelations
and reports suggested that the President is planning a safe exit away from the country.

"This is the ‘in-house change option’ that has been talked about. Unfortunately, it means that the military may have had to use its muscle to effect change yet again. Now if they stay at arm’s length and let the party take care
of its business, then things may improve. If not, then this is a silent coup with [Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza] Gilani as the front man."

However, Khokhar has denied such reports and he assured that the PPP chief will return back to Pakistan in a couple of days. The minister admitted that Zardari is in good health and there is no chance of him leaving his post. Khokhar
added that the President has been visiting Dubai for regular checkups in the past too and there is nothing serious about it.

“He had a minor heart attack on Tuesday. He flew to Dubai where he had an angioplasty. He’s in good health now. He will come back tomorrow. There’s no question of any resignation,” added Khokhar

The President was expected to address the nation on the memo scandal and the NATO strikes which killed Pakistani military personnel. A U.S official also claimed that the President was incoherent while talking to US President, Barack
Obama, about the NATO strikes.

"The noose was getting tighter — it was only a matter of time.” the U.S official said
