Transport situation is Punjab is getting worse with every passing day and keeping this in mind the government of Punjab is going to put 575 CNG buses on the road, by the end of January 2012. Lahore Transport Company Chairman (LTC)
Ahmad Hassaan revealed that out of the 575 buses, 200 buses would be run in Lahore while the rest will be in Multan, Bahawalpur and Rawalpindi.
This whole process is being done to promote CNG fitted urban transport in the Province and help curtail the high demand of CNG in Punjab. Hassaan stressed that there is need for high pressure CNG stations to provide gas to the
buses. He further divulged that the government would lease state land through a transparent process to set up high pressure CNG units.
Hussaan, who was addressing a meeting of the board of directors in Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Thursday, December 8, said that private investors would be appreciated for upgrading the existing stations into high-capacity CNG
filling systems for urban transport buses. The LTC chairman continued “We will enter into an agreement with private parties for the provision of CNG. Bus Rapid Transit project will be implemented on Ferozpur Road, Canal Road and Multan Road in a phased program.”
Hassan also disclosed that new urban bus operations has already been started on routes, B-9, B-20, B-33 and B-1 in Lahore and the organisation will strive hard to give people of Lahore an efficient and affordable transport system.
Pakistan is facing gas shortage and this has propelled the government to take strict actions. In order to manage the shortfall SNGPL (Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has limited the sale
of CNG to five days a week in certain cities of Punjab and Sindh.
A representative of Government has said that there will be serious repercussions for those CNG stations that are found breaking the two day ban. SNGPL spokesperson said, “In case of violation, they will be handed down heavy fines
besides legal action and cutting of gas connection.”
