Android is a market leader, says Google Chairman Eric Schmidt

Executive Chairman of Google, Inc. Eric Schmidt claimed on Wednesday, that Android OS-based phones are the market leaders in the US and all over the world; he was addressing the developers’ conference LeWeb in Paris.

This seemed an overstatement as the awe in the hall vouched for it. Through a streak for iPhones, iPads and Macbook Airs, the audience kept silence for a moment, as taking time to digest the bold statement made by the Chairman.

However, Schmidt maintained his stance to the statement with the help of supporting evidence. The graphs and sales records showed that Google is indeed the market leader. The 2011 third quarter sales of Galaxy and HTC smartphones combined to beat iPhone
by miles.

Google’s strategy of keeping the Android system in open market has surely given them the advantage of higher sales. Almost every cell phone manufacturer has incorporated the OS in their handhelds. Recently Sony Ericsson signed a contract with the Silicon
Valley goliath for a pre-installed Ice Cream Sandwich—Google’s latest version of Android—in their smartphone, Xperia Arc.

The reason for a stunned response from technology experts at the conference might have been because of the fact that Android, no matter what innovation it brings, always imitates the iOS. The navigation through menus and slides, scrolling and magnification,
and web browsing, all give a feel of using iPhone or iPad.

Even though Google has extended its hand to the developers, their first choice has always been the iOS for applications development. And besides, AppStore brings more to the table than Google’s App Market or Microsoft’s Marketplace.

The news reader app developers Flipboard with the namesake application said their first priority is to evolve the iPhone application. On the Android app, Chief Executive Mike McCue remained of few words.

Schmidt explained further in the conference that Android is not just a Linux-based kernel but a artistic amalgamation of social networking and mobile technology. Google now owns Google+, Google Maps and Google Music, and are furiously promoting them in their
ICS operating system.
