Senator, Azam Swati, has resigned from the Senate and his party position with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).
Swati made the announcement while talking to the reporters outside the Parliament house in Islamabad on Wednesday. The former minister for Science and Technology admitted that he has huge concerns over the government policies and
he no longer wants to be part of the corruption.
Swati is yet to hand his resignation to the party President, Maulana Fazlur Rehman and he has been told to follow the party rules. The Senator was sacked as minister by Prime Minister, Yousaf Raza Gilani, last year after he had
a clash with Hamid Saeed Kazmi over Hajj scam.
Sources close to Swati have confirmed that he has handed his resignation to the Chairman Senate and has stated corruption and lack of governance as the major reasons for his decision.
In his resignation letter to the Senate chairman, Mr Swati said: “The Senate has failed to play an effective role in resolving the issues of corruption, mismanagement and lack of governance, besides other social and economic ills
and on top of the recent episode of clear threat to matters of national security.” Speaking at a press conference outside parliament, he said it was a waste of time to sit in a “parliament of holders of fake degrees and dual nationality”, adding that the upper
house had failed to save democracy and provide relief and jobs to poor people. It is high time that all parliamentarians resign and go back to the people.”
Sources close to Azam Swati have revealed that he is interested in joining Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) and it is believed that he will make the announcement during Imran’s visit to Hazara next week.
The former minister was handed a show-cause notice by his party last month after he quitted the parliament over its inability to resolve the national issues. Swati blasted the parliament members and added that they only come here
for fun and are totally incapable of representing the nation.
